Abstract reasoning test

Find the rule hiding in a sequence of shapes. Follow the pattern to what comes next.

  1. 1Look at four frames that change by a rule.
  2. 2Pick the frame that comes next from eight options.
  3. 3At the end, review every answer and the rule behind it.

How scoring works

  • Your score is the number of sequences you solved, out of 12.
  • Puzzles get harder in three steps: one rule changing, then two at once, then three.
  • Skipped puzzles, and in timed mode puzzles left empty when time runs out, count as unsolved.
  • Every run generates a fresh set of puzzles, so you never see the same set twice.

A little perspective

Performance on these puzzles is not an IQ score or a prediction of exam results.

Results describe your performance on this task, with no invented percentiles or IQ equivalents.

What is in this abstract reasoning test?

Each puzzle shows four frames followed by eight possible answers. Your task is to work out how the frames change and select the fifth frame. Look at attributes such as shape, number, rotation, fill, size, color, and the position of a dot.

There are twelve puzzles in a run, arranged in three groups. The first group changes one rule at a time, the next combines two rules, and the final group combines three. After finishing, you can review the answer and the rule behind each sequence. The puzzles are generated for each run rather than drawn from a fixed question sheet.

Getting started

  • Check one attribute at a time. If the shape stays the same, look at count, orientation, fill, or position.
  • Test your proposed rule across all four frames before selecting an answer.
  • Use untimed mode to examine the explanations. Choose timed mode when you want to add time pressure, and compare results within the same mode.

Common questions

Is this an IQ test or an official aptitude test?

No. It is an original pattern-sequence challenge for practice. Your result is a count of solved puzzles, not a standardized IQ score or an official assessment for an employer or exam.

Can I review the answers?

Yes. The results include each sequence, your answer, the correct option, and an explanation of the changing rules. Skipped and unanswered puzzles count as unsolved.

Are the puzzles the same every time?

Each run generates a new set of sequences and answer options. Individual shapes or rule types can recur, so use the underlying rules rather than memorizing an answer position.
